Day 33 – 老鼠街

We visited a new place today named as 卓刀泉 but another name for it would be 老鼠街 which literally means “Mouse Street”. The bus ride there took longer than what we usually have at 45 minutes or so. Throughout the bus ride, I discovered how the Chinese can actually squeeze in the bus without caring about body contact with strangers. That happened to me during the ride as there was this middle-aged lady standing behind me and she had some body contact with me. Although not any sensitive parts, it was an awkward situation for me as it does not really happen in Singapore.

We are taking bus 907!

The Chinese way of squeezing in buses

Selling dog meat!

Poor dog.. I guess he's in a person's stomach by now... =(

We finally reached 老鼠街!

Upon reaching, we went to look for places to have our lunch. On our way, we saw this shop selling Dog Meat Steamboat which I found it very disgusting. Dogs are a man’s best friend, so why are we eating them? Found this steak restaurant which serves food that is up to acceptable standard at an acceptable price. All aspects of this restaurant are average with nothing to compliment and nothing to complain about. After lunch, it’s shopping time! To our surprise, the Mouse Street is just little shops stationed in a small alley, something like what you see in Peninsular Plaza in Singapore.

Prove that we had been to 卓刀泉!

Since it is mostly girls’ stuff in the street, the guys decided to visit the other side of the street which sells mostly IT stuff. Although catering more to my taste, I still do not find anything to shop or buy there as most of them are cameras, computers and MP3 players which I already have. At 8pm, some of us decided to come back to the hostel first as we were already lethargic.

Reflection

I must say that the Chinese are really “powerful”. Since China is the most populous country in the world, it is expected to have lots of squeezing around the public transports but I did not expect it to be so extreme. Comparing the population density between Singapore and China, Singapore has a much higher population density than China so it is expected to be more packed in Singapore than in China.

The difference is that we have different cultural values. In Singapore, most of the things is being controlled by the government such as transport, importing of food to our accommodation. Furthermore, bribery is a very rare thing seen in Singapore. Comparing the 2 countries, lots of bribery can be seen in China and other stuffs in areas are out of control by the government as the country is too big. We can see dogs being chopped up and eaten in public here and nobody treats it as a big deal but in Singapore it will become headline news in just a few hours. Therefore, we should be able to accept another country’s culture and compare it with our own culture.
